In 1954 at camp matsushima a helicopter with 6 passengers aboard were killed when the helicopter crashed in the bay. the names were col. Wayne Gill Springer,(42) Wayne Seroy Penick(26)pilot, Lt. col. Raymond Lee Johnson (46), Cpt. Leonard Martin (34) and 2 unidentified passengers. I was a rookie M.P. at the time and was to escort a large sum of money on the trip. Approximately 5 to 10 minutes before takeoff a corporal from finance came in and told me he would let me off the hook and escort the money because he knew it was my day off. I told him I was already dressed and armed so it wasn't necessary, but he insisted, so I said O.K.. This way I could go back and spend some time at the N.C.O. club with my buddies. It was the luckiest day of my life. I always wanted to find out the corpoals name who releived me but it was never given out at that time.I wanted to give my condolences to the family but never had the oppurnity. When you're young you never really think of these things as being important. As you get on in age and look back, you realize how lucky you really were. Because of their son or brother, I'm here. If anyone has information about this I would like to hear from them. Thanks for reading this long story. But it's true. Sincerely, Bill
